Agency in the AI-embedded Enterprise

As AI systems become more widely embedded in business operations, the way people work, make decisions and collaborate is being actively reshaped. The question is no longer whether to use AI, but how individuals and teams shape their work, choices and outcomes alongside it. These changes also impact ‘agency’.

Agency is the capacity to make conscious choices and shape outcomes in the work you do. As AI and new ways of working are introduced, this ability to act with freedom and responsibility, make decisions that matter, take initiative and be accountable for results, can be tested and reinforced.

Workplace culture is both the driver and reflection of agency. Organisations that create environments where people feel empowered to experiment, apply AI thoughtfully and collaborate effectively will see culture evolve in response. In turn, these choices strengthen trust, learning, and adaptability across teams.

How to Support Agency

Supporting human agency requires more than intent. It depends on organisations being able to see, understand and respond to how work is actually being experienced as AI becomes part of everyday operations. This involves:

  • Practical AI literacy: Ensuring people understand how and when to use AI in their work, while recognising where human judgement remains essential
  • Trust and psychological safety: Creating teams where outputs can be questioned, insights shared, and experimentation is encouraged without fear
  • Adaptive roles and leadership: Ensuring workflows and decision-making structures keep people central to shaping outcomes
  • Ethical and human-led practices: Making sure AI enhances human capability while maintaining accountability and fairness
  • Workforce data and sentiment analysis: Leveraging employee feedback and organisational insights to understand experiences and guide interventions that strengthen agency

The Value of Combining High-Quality People Data With AI

This is where workforce insight matters. Cultural Infusion’s Atlas builds trust in today’s diverse teams, as it enhances intercultural communication and understanding, mitigating against the stereotypes and biases that AI can perpetuate. Grounded in a highly sophisticated human identity paradigm, Atlas helps teams understand who they are and reveals who is missing from the room – insights that AI cannot generate on its own.

By combining holistic workforce data with AI, organisations can:

  • Understand where agency is being enabled or constrained
  • Identify friction points in AI-augmented ways of working
  • Track shifts in trust, confidence, and engagement over time
  • Design targeted interventions that strengthen culture and capability

For leaders, the question is fundamental: Does AI enhance human agency, or erode it? Rather than assuming how AI is affecting people, organisations can use insight to listen at scale, adapt intentionally, and keep human agency at the centre of transformation. That is agency at work.
