Constructing the future of technology and AI with humanity at the centre has never been more crucial. Our humanity is expressed through culture, and it is culture that shapes how technology is built, deployed, and experienced. Launched in 2019, Cultural Infusion’s Atlas is helping lead a shift toward a technology sector that recognises, measures, and values cultural diversity.

Through its innovative Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) platform, the Atlas provides the first-of-its-kind measurement and analysis of cultural diversity, enabling organisations worldwide to gain a holistic understanding of their cultural composition and implement strategies that ensure no one is unintentionally excluded.

Leaving No One Behind

While many organisations embrace diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, the challenge lies in implementing them effectively. There is a marked tendency to focus on visible markers of diversity, like visible disability, visible ethnic variation and gender. Organisations committed to inclusive and engaged workforces must consider a fuller range of attributes, including cultural heritages, belief systems, languages, affiliations to place and relational dynamics. Approaches that fail to capture a fuller spectrum of human identity often unintentionally shift the burden of exclusion or other inequities from one group attribute to another, sharpening polarisation and potentially leading to resentment, backlash and other forms of conflict. The phenomenon of well-intentioned diversity efforts that apply intersectional theory selectively rather than holistically has been described as the intersectionality gridlock.

The Atlas measures diversity in comprehensive detail that produces actionable insights to help organisations craft tailored strategies, foster genuine intercultural dialogue and understanding and ensure that every individual feels valued for their unique cultural identity rather than labelled and stereotyped or pressured to leave important aspects of their identity at home.

Comprehensive data does not replace but supports respectful dialogue, listening and intuition. By prioritising data-driven approaches, the Atlas is setting a new standard for inclusive business practices across industries.

The Role of Holistic Data in Complementing AI

As artificial intelligence (AI) becomes a cornerstone of modern technology, ensuring that it reflects a broad range of perspectives is critical. These systems are trained on selective datasets that do not include the breadth of cultural diversity and this risks perpetuating inequalities and failing to serve diverse global populations. The Atlas plays an important role in addressing this challenge by providing democratised diversity data that can help mitigate against AI’s biases through its ability to map cultural diversity inclusively and raise awareness of ‘who is in the room’.

AI 2030: A Partnership for the Future

Cultural Infusion’s Atlas can mitigate AI bias by:

✔ Enhancing data diversity
✔ Grounding labels in cultural reality
✔ Supporting rigorous, contextual bias evaluation
✔ Enabling fairer feature design
✔ Informing localised AI versions
✔ Improving interpretability
✔ Guiding ethical governance

The Atlas is a key partner in AI 2030, a global initiative dedicated to the responsible development of AI.

Through its participation in the AI 2030 Global Data Challenge, Cultural Infusion is championing cultural awareness in AI, ensuring that emerging technologies are built on principles of equity, inclusivity and representation. This partnership cements the Atlas’s position as a leader in ethical AI development and reinforces its commitment to shaping the future of technology.
